    Apple silicon or Intel? The one decision that matters

    Used Mac Pro is really two machines sharing a name, and picking the wrong one is an expensive mistake.

    • M2 Ultra Mac Pro (2023) — far faster per watt, near-silent, and it keeps the PCIe slots. But unified memory is fixed at purchase and it does not support graphics-card upgrades. What you buy is what you keep.
    • Intel Xeon Mac Pro (2019) — slower on modern workloads, but genuinely modular: user-upgradeable RAM and PCIe graphics. Still right if you depend on a specific card, on software that never moved to Apple silicon, or on booting Windows natively.

    If you do not need internal cards or upgradeable RAM, be honest about it — a used Mac Studio of the same chip class delivers comparable compute in a smaller, cheaper package. We would rather say so than sell you a tower you do not need.

    What to check on a used Mac Pro

    These are workstations that have usually been run hard, often in studios or racks.

    • Serial verified against Apple’s database before payment and shared with you.
    • Activation Lock confirmed off, so the machine is genuinely yours to use.
    • Apple Diagnostics (ASD) across memory, storage and the thermal system.
    • Every PCIe slot tested. The expansion is the entire reason to buy this machine, so an untested slot is an untested purchase.
    • Fan and thermal behaviour under sustained load, plus dust ingress — rack units in particular live in hot, busy rooms.
    • Intel units: installed RAM and fitted cards documented, so you know exactly what is in the chassis before paying.

    Tower or Rack?

    Tower is the desk-side chassis with handles or optional wheels — the right choice for a studio, edit suite or office.

    Rack is the same machine in a 4U rack-mount enclosure for equipment rooms. It is louder in the open, because it expects to sit behind a door with forced airflow. Do not buy a Rack for a quiet office; people regularly do, and regret it.

The figure we quote is the figure we pay: we do not revise it downward on inspection day, provided the Mac matches the description and photos you sent.

    Yes. Sign out of iCloud, turn off Find My Mac, then erase macOS via Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. We confirm Activation Lock is off before completing the purchase — a Mac still locked to your Apple Account cannot be resold.
