How to check a used Mac before you pay

Five checks decide whether a used Mac is a bargain or a loss, and all five happen before money changes hands: verify the serial with Apple, confirm there is no Activation Lock, read the battery cycle count and capacity together, run Apple Diagnostics, and confirm the model identifier matches what you were promised. None of them requires tools, all five take about twenty minutes, and every one can be done in front of the seller.

This checklist is written to be used anywhere — against a private seller on Dubizzle or Facebook Marketplace, in a shop, or on delivery. MacUAE runs every one of these on every device before it is offered for sale, which is why the list exists. Updated August 2026.

1. Verify the serial number with Apple

A Mac is identified by its serial number — the identifier Apple's own coverage tool expects. Find the serial under the Apple menu, About This Mac, or etched on the underside of the case, then enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com.

Three things to read from the result:

• Apple recognises it. A serial Apple does not know is a serious warning sign — walk away.
• The model matches the advert. The check reveals the actual model and year, which is how a 2019 machine gets sold as a 2020 one.
• Remaining coverage. Some used Macs still carry Apple warranty or AppleCare, and where it remains it usually transfers with the machine.

Ask for the serial before you travel to see a Mac. A seller unwilling to send it in advance has answered a different question than the one you asked.

2. Confirm the Mac is free of Activation Lock

This is the check that protects you from the worst outcome. If Find My Mac is still enabled and tied to the previous owner's Apple Account, the Mac is Activation Locked— and nobody can remove that lock except the original owner. Not a dealer, not a shop, not Apple. A locked Mac is worth close to nothing regardless of its condition.

Ask the seller to do this in front of you:

• Sign out of iCloud in System Settings.
• Erase the Mac — System Settings, General, Transfer or Reset, Erase All Content and Settings.
• Let it restart into the setup assistant.

If setup asks for a previous owner's Apple Account password, the lock is still active. Do not pay and do not accept a promise to sort it out later.

3. Read the battery cycle count and capacity together

On a MacBook, hold Option and click the Apple menu, then System Information, then Power. Two numbers matter and they must be read as a pair.

• Cycle count. Apple rates most modern MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles. Under 300 is excellent, 300–500 good, 500–800 usable but ageing.
• Maximum capacity. The percentage of original capacity still available. A low cycle count with poor capacity usually means a battery that has spent years sitting at full charge in the heat — a real consideration in the UAE.

A seller who cannot tell you both numbers has not looked. Get them in writing before you travel — MacUAE states both on every MacBook it sells, in writing, before payment.

Desktops — Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio — have no battery, so this step is replaced by checking fan noise and thermal behaviour under sustained load.

4. Run Apple Diagnostics

Apple's own hardware test is built into every Mac and takes a few minutes. On Apple silicon, shut down, then hold the power button until startup options appear and press Command-D. On Intel Macs, restart holding D.

Note any reference codes it returns and search them before you pay. A clean pass is not a guarantee of a perfect machine, but a failure is a definitive reason to stop.

5. Confirm the model identifier and configuration

Check the model identifier under About This Mac against what you were promised. This is where configuration substitution shows up: 8GB sold as 16GB, 256GB sold as 512GB, a base chip sold as a Pro.

It matters more on Apple silicon than it ever did before, because memory and storage cannot be upgraded afterwards by anyone, including Apple. The configuration you buy is the configuration you keep for the life of the machine.

What to check that has nothing to do with software

• Screen. Full white and full black images reveal dead pixels, backlight bleed and staining that a desktop wallpaper hides.
• Keyboard. Open a text document and press every key, including the arrows and modifiers.
• Ports. Bring a cable and test each one. A dead Thunderbolt port is a logic-board fault.
• Hinge and case. Corner dents usually mean a drop, and a drop the seller did not mention is worth asking about.
• Fans under load. Play a 4K video for a few minutes and listen. Grinding is a failing fan; silence with a hot case can be worse.

The one rule that matters most

Every check happens before payment, not after. Once money has changed hands with a private seller you have no recourse, no warranty and usually no way to find them again. A seller who resists a twenty-minute check on a purchase this size is not someone to buy from.
