The M4 is the first real redesign of the Mac mini in more than a decade, and the changes are practical rather than cosmetic.

• 16GB of memory as standard. The 8GB base configuration is gone. This is the single biggest reason to prefer the M4 second-hand: even the cheapest unit has enough memory to stay useful for years.
• Front-facing ports. Two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front, which sounds minor until you have spent a year reaching behind a desk.
• Much smaller chassis — it genuinely disappears under a monitor.
• Three displays supported, where the M1 managed two.

The quirk: Apple moved the power button to the underside of the machine. It is not a fault and nothing is wrong with your unit — but it surprises people, so we would rather you hear it from us before delivery than discover it yourself.
