This is the bracket where buyers generally stop optimising around a limitation and start choosing on merit. The useful question changes from "what can I live with?" to "what will still suit me in three years?"

Two things are worth weighting heavily here:

• Memory. On modern Macs it is part of the chip package and cannot be upgraded later — not by us, not by Apple. Whatever the machine has is what it has for life, so buy for the workload you expect to have, not the one you have this month.
• Chip generation over cosmetic condition. A newer-generation machine with light marks will stay useful and hold its value longer than an older, prettier one. Marks fade from your attention within a week; a slow machine does not.
