Selling your MacBook in Dubai? Before you hand it over — whether to MacUAE for trade-in credit or to a private buyer — you must wipe it properly. Skip a step and the next owner can’t set up the Mac (Activation Lock), or worse, can access your data. Here is the complete, step-by-step process we walk every trade-in customer through at our Concord Tower store.
Step 1: Back up everything
Once you erase the Mac, your data is gone — there is no “undo”. Back up first using one (or both) of:
- Time Machine — the easiest option. Connect an external SSD, go to System Settings → General → Time Machine, and select the drive. Wait for the backup to complete.
- Manual copy — drag your Documents, Downloads, Photos, and Desktop folders to an external drive. Don’t forget browser bookmarks and app-specific data.
- iCloud — confirm your Desktop and Documents are syncing to iCloud (System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud Drive).
Step 2: Sign out of everything
- iCloud — System Settings → Apple ID → Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password to disable Find My Mac and remove the Mac from your account.
- iMessage — open Messages → Settings → iMessage → Sign Out.
- Apple Music / TV — open the app → Account → Authorisations → Deauthorise This Mac.
- Third-party apps — sign out of any app with device limits (Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, Spotify, Netflix, etc.). This frees up a licence slot for your next Mac.
Step 3: Turn off Find My Mac
This is the step most people miss — and it is critical. If Find My Mac stays on, the next owner cannot activate the Mac without your Apple ID password. This is called Activation Lockand it bricks the Mac for the new owner. Signing out of iCloud in Step 2 should handle this, but double-check by going to System Settings → Apple ID → Find My Mac — it must show “Off”.
Step 4: Unpair Bluetooth devices
If you use AirPods, a Magic Mouse, or a Bluetooth keyboard, unpair them so they don’t conflict with the new owner’s setup. System Settings → Bluetooth → click the “i” next to each device → Forget This Device.
Step 5: Erase All Content and Settings (Apple Silicon)
On any Mac with an M1 or newer chip (or a T2 Intel Mac from 2018+), the easiest wipe is the built-in Erase Assistant:
- System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset
- Click “Erase All Content and Settings”
- Follow the prompts — enter your admin password and Apple ID password
- The Mac reboots, wipes the SSD (cryptographically — instant), and reinstalls macOS
- When the setup screen appears, press Cmd + Q to shut down — the Mac is now ready for the next owner
Step 5 (alternative): Intel Macs without T2
Older Intel Macs (pre-2018) don’t have Erase Assistant. For these:
- Restart and hold Cmd + R until the Apple logo appears
- Select Disk Utility → select your main drive (Macintosh HD)
- Click Erase — format as APFS, name it “Macintosh HD”
- Quit Disk Utility and select Reinstall macOS
- When the setup wizard starts, press Cmd + Q to shut down
Step 6: Hand it over clean
The Mac should now boot to the “Hello” screen in multiple languages — this is what the new owner expects. Don’t complete the setup. Include the original charger, box, and any accessories if you have them — this adds AED 100–300 to the trade-in or sale value.
Why this matters
- Activation Lock — if you don’t sign out of iCloud, the Mac is useless to the new owner. We have to reject Activation-Locked trade-ins every week.
- Privacy — your photos, messages, browser history, and saved passwords are accessible until you wipe.
- Trade-in value — MacUAE pays more for ready-to-sell Macs (wiped, signed out, with charger) because we can list them the same day.
What if you forgot to sign out of iCloud?
If you have already handed the Mac over and Find My Mac is still on, the new owner cannot activate it. You can remove the device remotely:
- On another Apple device or on iCloud.com, sign in with your Apple ID.
- Go to Find Devices and select the Mac you sold.
- Click Erase This Device, then Remove This Device from your account.
- The Mac will be Activation Unlocked the next time it connects to Wi-Fi.
If you cannot do this remotely (no other Apple device, lost password), the buyer will need to bring the Mac to an Apple Store with the original purchase receipt — a painful process. Always do Step 2 (sign out of iCloud) before handing over the Mac.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reinstall macOS before selling?
Yes — Erase All Content and Settings reinstalls macOS automatically and leaves the Mac on the “Hello” setup screen. Don’t complete the setup; the new owner wants to set it up with their own Apple ID.
Should I sell my Mac with the box and accessories?
Yes — including the original box, charger, and any unused accessories adds AED 100–300 to the trade-in or sale value. Buyers and dealers love complete sets.
