Switch from Windows to Mac — Complete Dubai Guide

MacUAE Team 9 min read· May 2026

Switching from Windows to Mac is one of the best tech decisions you can make in 2026 — Apple Silicon is faster, cooler, and quieter than most Windows laptops at the same price, the battery lasts a full working day, and macOS just works. In Dubai, where we sell to a lot of ex-pats and new arrivals making the switch, here is everything you actually need to know.

Why switch in 2026?

  • Apple Silicon is faster — even a used M1 Air at AED 1,100 outperforms most AED 3,000 Windows ultrabooks.
  • Battery life — 15–18 hours of real use vs 6–8 hours on most Windows laptops.
  • Silence — the MacBook Air is fanless. No more jet-engine fan noise during a Zoom call.
  • Apple Intelligence — macOS Sequoia ships with Writing Tools, image generation, and ChatGPT integration built in.
  • Resale value — a 4-year-old MacBook still sells for half its purchase price. A 4-year-old Windows laptop is e-waste.

Which Mac should be your first?

Moving your files across

Apple’s Migration Assistant(built into macOS) can pull your files, browser data, and even some Windows app settings from your old PC over Wi-Fi or a network cable. For most users it just works. For larger transfers, copy files to an external SSD first — exFAT-formatted drives work on both Windows and macOS.

Software compatibility — what still works

  • Microsoft Office — full Mac version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint exists. Your Office 365 subscription covers both platforms.
  • Google Drive / Docs — works in browser, plus a native Google Drive app.
  • Zoom, Teams, Slack — all native Mac apps.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud — full Mac versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, etc.
  • Windows-only apps — if you must run a specific Windows app (rare), use Parallels Desktop (AED 400/year) for virtualisation, or CrossOver for games.

The keyboard — the only real adjustment

The biggest learning curve is the keyboard. The Command (⌘) key replaces Ctrl for most shortcuts: Cmd+C copy, Cmd+V paste, Cmd+Tab switch apps. The Control key still exists but is used differently. After a week it becomes muscle memory. Other differences:

  • Cmd+Space opens Spotlight (search and launch apps)
  • Cmd+Q actually quits an app (closing a window does not quit on Mac)
  • Two-finger tap on the trackpad is right-click
  • Mission Control (three-finger swipe up) shows all open windows

UAE-specific tips

  • Arabic input — macOS has full Arabic keyboard support built in; add it in System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources.
  • Local apps — Talabat, Careem, du, Etisalat, Emirates NBD, ADIB — all have native Mac apps or work perfectly in Safari.
  • VPN — macOS supports most popular VPN apps natively.
  • Apple Pay — works in Safari for any UAE-issued card.

Try before you buy

Want to test-drive a Mac before committing? Visit us at Concord Tower, Office 45, Dubai Media City. You can handle every model we sell, type on the keyboards, feel the trackpad, and ask any question — no pressure. We also offer a 14-day return policy on used Macs, so if switching really does not work for you, you are not stuck.

First week with your new Mac

Once you have your used Mac from MacUAE, here’s how to spend the first week:

  • Day 1 — run Software Update to install the latest macOS, then sign in with your Apple ID. Restore from your backup via Migration Assistant.
  • Day 2 — install Microsoft Office, Google Chrome (or stick with Safari), and any Adobe CC apps you use.
  • Day 3 — learn three essential shortcuts: Cmd+Space (Spotlight), Cmd+Tab (app switcher), and Cmd+Q (quit). Install Rectangle (free) for window snapping.
  • Day 4–7 — set up iCloud Drive for file sync, configure Time Machine backups to an external SSD, and customise the Dock. By the end of the week, muscle memory will have caught up.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Closing the red dot does not quit the app — use Cmd+Q. Closing a window leaves the app running (look for the dot under its Dock icon).
  • Don't install antivirus — macOS has built-in protection (XProtect and Gatekeeper). Third-party AV slows your Mac down and is unnecessary for most users.
  • Don't use “Mac cleaners” — apps like CleanMyMac cause more problems than they solve. macOS manages storage and memory itself.
  • Back up from day one — buy an external SSD (any 1TB USB-C model around AED 300) and turn on Time Machine. Don’t wait until you lose data.
  • Don't fight the trackpad — macOS gestures (two-finger scroll, three-finger drag, pinch to zoom) are designed for the Magic Trackpad. A third-party mouse works fine but you lose gestures.
  • Avoid “helper” apps that ask for full disk access — if a free app you’ve never heard of wants full disk access, refuse. Stick to apps from the Mac App Store or well-known developers.

Our verdict

Most switchers regret only one thing — not switching sooner. The combination of Apple Silicon performance, all-day battery, native Office/Adobe support, and Apple Intelligence makes a used Mac a clear upgrade from a Windows laptop at the same price.
