Battery cycle count is the single most important number to check when buying a used MacBook. Here's what it means, how to check it, and what numbers to look for.
What is a battery cycle?
A cycle count is one full discharge and recharge of the battery. If you use 50% of your battery today and recharge, then use 50% tomorrow and recharge, that's one cycle — not two. Apple rates MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles before they drop below 80% of original capacity.
How to check cycle count
- Apple menu → About This Mac
- Click "More Info" → scroll down → "System Report"
- In the left sidebar, click "Power" under Hardware
- Look for "Cycle Count" under Battery Information
What cycle count is good?
| Cycle Count | Condition | Battery Health |
|---|---|---|
| 0–100 | Excellent | ~95–100% capacity |
| 100–300 | Very Good | ~90–95% capacity |
| 300–500 | Good | ~85–90% capacity |
| 500–800 | Fair | ~80–85% capacity |
| 800–1000 | Replace Soon | Below 80% capacity |
| 1000+ | Replace Now | Battery service recommended |
