MacBook Air M1 vs M2 — Is the Upgrade Worth It?

MacUAE Team 7 min read· May 2026

This is the question we get asked more than any other at MacUAE: should I save AED 400 and buy the M1 Air, or stretch to the M2? Both are excellent laptops — the M1 starts at AED 1,100 used, the M2 at AED 1,500 used, so the difference is exactly AED 400. Here is the honest, spec-by-spec breakdown to help you decide.

Performance — how much faster is the M2?

In benchmarks, the M2 is roughly 18% faster on CPU and 35% faster on GPU than the M1. In real life, both chips feel identical for browsing, Office, video calls, and light photo editing. The M2 pulls ahead noticeably in:

  • 4K video editing (M2 has the new media engine with ProRes support)
  • Photo editing with large RAW files in Lightroom
  • Heavy multitasking with 30+ browser tabs and multiple apps
  • Light gaming (the M2’s 10-core GPU is meaningfully faster)

For everyone else — students, office workers, casual users — the M1 is genuinely fast enough.

Design — the real reason to upgrade

The M2 is a full redesign. You get a bigger, brighter 13.6-inch display with a notch (the same Liquid Retina panel as the 14″ Pro), a noticeably better 1080p webcam, MagSafe 3 charging (so a frayed cable doesn’t kill your laptop), and a flatter, more modern chassis in four colours. The M1 looks dated by comparison — it’s the same wedge shape Apple has used since 2010.

Battery — the M1 actually wins

Counter-intuitively, the M1 has slightly longer battery life — up to 18 hours vs 15 hours on the M2. The M1 chip is more power-efficient, and the older 720p webcam draws less power than the newer 1080p. Both are all-day laptops, but the M1 edges ahead here.

Ports and connectivity

Both Airs have two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports. The M2 adds MagSafe 3as a third charging option — very useful if you want to free up a USB-C port for an external SSD while charging. Both support one external display (the M2 supports two on certain macOS versions with the lid closed).

Apple Intelligence — both work

Both the M1 and M2 chips support Apple Intelligence on macOS Sequoia. The M2 is slightly faster at on-device image generation, but both run all the AI features — Writing Tools, the new Siri, ChatGPT integration, Image Playground.

When to buy the M1 (AED 1,100)

  • Your budget is firm under AED 1,200.
  • You only browse, write, study, or do office work.
  • You want the longest possible battery life.
  • You don’t care about the notch, MagSafe, or 1080p webcam.
  • You want the cheapest Mac that supports Apple Intelligence.

When to pay AED 400 more for the M2 (AED 1,500)

  • You do any video or photo editing.
  • You take a lot of Zoom/Teams calls — the 1080p webcam is a real upgrade.
  • You want the modern design with MagSafe charging.
  • You want a brighter, larger display with thinner bezels.
  • You plan to keep the Mac for 5+ years — the M2 will get macOS updates longer.

Real buyer scenarios

To make this concrete, here are three real scenarios we see every week at MacUAE:

  • Sara, NYUAD student, budget AED 1,200 — bought the M1 Air. She uses it for essays, Zoom lectures, and Netflix. Battery lasts her a full day on campus. “I don’t notice the older design at all”, she says.
  • Ahmed, marketing manager in Dubai Media City, budget AED 1,800 — bought the M2 Air. He runs PowerPoint, Figma, and Chrome with 40 tabs daily. The 1080p webcam improved his Teams calls instantly, and MagSafe charging means his toddler can’t yank the laptop off the desk.
  • Priya, freelance photographer, budget AED 2,000 — stretched to the M2 Air 16GB. She edits wedding photos in Lightroom on the move. “The 16GB RAM was the right call — Lightroom doesn’t lag at all.”

Frequently asked questions

Which has a better resale value?

The M2 holds its value slightly better — AED 100–200 more on the used market three years from now. But the AED 400 you save today by buying the M1 outweighs that difference. Both retain roughly 40–50% of their value after 3 years, which is excellent for a laptop.

Can I run two external displays on either Air?

The M1 Air officially supports only one external display. The M2 Air supports one external display with the lid open, two with the lid closed (macOS 13.3+). If you need a true dual-monitor setup, step up to a MacBook Pro — the M3 Pro handles two external displays with the lid open.

Should I wait for the M4 Air to drop in price?

Used M4 Airs currently start around AED 2,800 — AED 1,300 more than the M2. The M4 is faster, but for 90% of users the difference is invisible. Don’t wait — the M2 at AED 1,500 is the right buy in 2026.

Our verdict

The M1 Air at AED 1,100 is the best value Mac in Dubai — full stop. But if you can stretch by AED 400, the M2 at AED 1,500 is a meaningfully better laptop: faster, brighter, better camera, modern design, and a longer useful life. For most buyers, the M2 is the sweet spot.
